The different types of metal coated sinks

Of all the materials that is widely used in making kitchen and bathroom sinks, metal is considered to be the most durable one. There are different types of metal and metal coated sinks available in the market these days that are made from stainless steel, cast iron, copper, brass or a combination of these metals.

The most popular and the least expensive among the metal coated kitchen sinks is the stainless steel kitchen and bathroom sinks. As the stainless steel does not have a ceramic or an enamel coating, they are highly durable and will not get easily damaged due to the regular use. The lower the gauge, the heavier and more durable is the steel. The chrome coating applies to its surface will provide the required strength to the sink and will prevent it from cracking, chipping and nicking. The nickel coating applied on the sink surface will increase the quality and life of the sink and will prevent it from rusting, staining or fading. The lower priced models of the stainless steel sinks come without undercoating and are not highly polished and hence tend to be noisy and dent easily. The more expensive models are heavily undercoated to absorb the sounds and noises and to retain heat.

The enamel coated cast iron sinks are the most durable material that is used to make sinks. It is usually the most expensive among the various types of metal coated sinks. The cast iron sinks are also very heavy. The cast iron sink is produced by pouring the liquid or melted iron into a mold and the melted iron takes the shape of the mold it is poured into. The thickness of the cast iron sink along with its heaviness explains why its surface is resistant to acids and also provides extra protection from getting chipped, scratched and dented. The cast iron kitchen sinks with extra thick enamel coating on its surface provides extraordinary beauty to itself and to the surroundings where it is placed. Generally, the cast iron sinks are fire polished to obtain various colors and shining gloss.

To add contemporary and antique look into any bathroom or kitchen, one has to go for the traditional copper sinks. Depending on the type of sink that will suit the décor of the home, one can choose from copper sinks available in the markets in Weathered copper, Dark bronze, Satin nickel and Polished nickel finishes. The hammered copper sinks which are hand hammered to bring out the natural look of copper is the perfect compliment for individual kitchen or bathroom sinks. The copper metal sinks installed will oxidize after sometime and will obtain a patina which is a chemical change that causes the metal to change its color. Copper metal is much softer to stainless steel and hence will scratch easily. Also it changes to a deep, weathered color as it oxidizes rapidly. It has antibacterial properties and hence will not be affected by bacteria on its surface. The metal polish applied on the copper sinks regularly will keep the copper sink to be brand new. Some people prefer the aged look of the copper sink wherein it will change unevenly and spot to exhibit rich color combinations ranging from pinks to greens to browns. Applying metal polish on the surface of the copper sinks will remove most scratched surfaces.
