Those Annoying African Termites
By Mandy Fain

Part of the animal kingdom includes something all building owners fret about, the termite. In the wild, termites help to control the balance of nature, although they are a pest, they provide an ecological need, as they feed on dead trees and provide the nutrients to fertilize the soil. Although we see termites as a pest, they do more for nature then we realize. They help with many things in nature and without the termite in the wild; nature would suffer a great impact as the soil deteriorates from lack of fertilization needed to start new growth.

All together, there are over three thousand varieties of termites. They differ from each other by structure in their colonies, color and devastation. African termites have a keen survival method. Everyone has a different view about termites, but if you look at the African termite, you will see that they have actually created a colony to live that reaches heights of twenty feet.

Within the colony, one may find as many as five million of these annoying little destroyers. They keep an internal temperature of about eighty-six degrees inside the colony. Science learns a great deal about the African termite by studying the construction of the colonies and the ability to control their internal temperature in the nest.

Tunnels and air ducts within the nest of the African termite allow for airflow, temperature and moisture control. As more studies are conducted on the mounds of the African termite with a digital scanning devise, receiving a clear picture and understanding of the construction and design of these mounds may help with construction of building in the future. The African termite has such a unique way of constructing the mounds that designers and builders learn about such things as temperature and airflow control.

We have dealt with termites throughout time and millions have been spent to rid homes and buildings of these destructive pests. African termites actually have the ability to live with changes in the environment they live in although they are incredibility small. We might learn from the African termite if we could look past their devastating affects on our society. Even if we learn a few things from natures habitants, we have learned more than what we could from years of life and technology. Although technology provides us, the ability to learn from the African termites it is also technology that we use to terminate them as well.
