Eliminating Basement Mold

Mold in your basement can be annoying and hard to get rid of. It can't survive without moisture being present. You will need to find out where the water source is coming in at to remedy the situation. There are many different methods for taking care of it once you know where it is coming from. Mold doesn't develop unless the area has been receiving moisture for quite some time. There could be a broken pipe in the wall that you aren't aware of or rain water could be seeping into the basement.
Once you have cornered the source of the moisture you need to find out how much damage has been done. You need to take an evaluation of the area surrounding the damage as well. It is probably that there is much more damage done due to the mold then you can see with your eyes. You may be better off getting an expert to take a look at it for you. A pocket knife can also help you find out how deep the damage goes. If only one area of the floor has been affected and you can identify the external source then it is fine to clean it up on your own. Soap and water mixed with bleach should do the job.
If the mold has penetrated the surface of the gypsum board then you will need to remove it and get rid of all the mold on it. Before you replace it allow it to dry completely in the sun and you can even repaint it you want to. In most cases though it is going to be much easier to simply replace it than to remove all of the mold from it. The sooner you are able to identify you have a problem the faster you can find the source and minimize the amount of damage that takes place.
