How To Significantly Increase The Life Of Your Hot Tub Cover
By Rodney Wallin

For a very reasonable cost you can increase the life of your hot tub cover by literally years. It's not expensive or complicated to extend its useful life and in this article we discuss some easy ways to protect your investment.

If you've just invested in a new hot tub cover that has a vinyl outer skin, or have one that came with the purchase of your new spa, you might want to consider how you can extend its maximum life. Spa covers do wear out and are expensive to replace. There are some steps you can take to make it last as long as possible and you can literally add years to the life of your cover.

The sun is the biggest enemy of a hot tub cover. As soon as you unfold your spa cover for the first time and the sun hits it, ultraviolet light is absorbed, and the outer vinyl starts to break down. Over time you will begin to see discoloration and cracking. Once this takes hold the outer skin becomes weakened and can begin to tear. Before long you'll get disgusted with the ugly mess and will find yourself getting your credit card out to buy a new one, and the cycle starts over again.

There are two ways to protect the hot tub cover from sun damage. One is mechanical, and the other is chemical.

To physically protect your spa cover from the aging effects of the sun you can buy special covers designed to shield the hot tub cover itself. This is not as silly as it might sound because these are inexpensive and if you pay $50 to extend the life of a $400 spa cover, then you come out way ahead in the long run.

You might also be satisfied with a UV resistant tarp from your local hardware store. For many people, though, part of the aesthetics of a hot tub cover is the tasteful look it adds to their home and a regular tarp probably won't appear as stylish as you would like.

The second method, chemical, allows you to use compounds that protect the hot tub from the UV rays of the sun much like sun screen protects your skin. These vinyl treatment chemicals are absorbed into the surface of the spa cover and greatly reduce the damage from UV rays. Plan on using these special cleaners and conditioners every few months.

Both types of protection for your hot tub cover are available from your spa dealer, or a quick search on the Internet will turn up many options as well.

For a very reasonable cost you can stretch the life of your spa cover by years. If you are the kind of consumer who likes to protect the investment you make in things you buy, then you'll probably want to do the same for your hot tub cover.
