Overview of Swimming Pool Filters
By Scott Hares

One of the most important parts of a swimming pool pump system is the filter. Obviously, the pool pump filter is responsible for the removal of dirt, bugs, leaves and other debris that would otherwise make your pool unusable. That static nature of pools means that the water sits and collects what the wind brings. As time goes on, the water becomes unappealing, or even unhealthy to swim in.

This is where your pool filter comes in. With great efficiency, it remove particulates that contaminate your swimming pool. Today, there are as many different kinds of pool filters as there are different swimming pool pumping systems, and using the correct one for your system is key to an energy efficient system.

The different types of filters:

Three different types of swimming pool pump filters make up the bulk of availability. Cartridge filters, sand filters, and diatomaceous earth, or DE filters.

The diatomaceous earth filter is able to remove the most tiny of particulate present in any pool water. Made of a material with a consistency of fine powder, these filters are top of the line.

The sand filled filter allows for a higher throughput of water than do the diatomaceous earth filters due to the more corse sized sand used. On the other hand, the filtering ability of the sand filled filter is not capable of removing the fine particles that the DE type of filter can.

You can optimize your filter use simply by choosing the correct filter for your pool, your system, your particular needs. The size of your pool is a big decision maker in which filter is right for you. Your local pool specialist can help you calculate all the many different variables required for choosing the correct filter for the more popular pool setups in your area.

A good ballpark figure for pool pump filters is around $40, but final cost depends a lot on which manufacturer and model is right for you. Keep your pool well maintained and clean, you can enjoy many a safe, refreshing swim on those warm summer days with friends and family.
