Vacuum Cleaner Descriptions and Terms
By Mariaa Patel

When you are ready to purchase a vacuum cleaner, it helps to understand the lingo so that you can make a wise decision. You will want a vacuum cleaner that is reliable, efficient, and reduces the amount of work required for cleaning. Making this type of decision involves researching the lists of features and prices on many different makes and models of vacuum cleaners. You will need to understand a few common vacuum cleaner terms to help you with your research. This is a short list of terms which will prove useful in your search for the perfect vacuum for you:

Air Flow
Air Flow is the movement of air from one place to another. In vacuum cleaners it usually refers to the movement of air through the vacuum cleaner or central vacuum system and is measured in CFM i.e. cubic feet per minute. In a vacuum cleaner, the air flow is inversely proportional to the complete resistance within the system.

Air Pressure
Air Pressure is the pressure of atmospheric or condensed air. The suction motor in a vacuum cleaner reduces the air pressure sequentially to create air flow.

Armature
An armature of a vacuum cleaner is made of plastic-coated steel core, with a copper enamel-insulated wire attached to it. All the cleaning suction operation is conducted inside the armature, so it is considered to be the heart of the vacuum cleaner.

Ball Bearing
The ball bearing is a low resistance kind of bearing in which the round steel balls spin between a rotating inner race and an inactive outer race. The sides often have seal rings to keep the bearing clean and running smooth.

Central Vacuum System
This is the fixed cylindrical vacuum cleaner, generally planted in the basements or garage. These systems usually have much larger and powerful motors compared to the portable vacuum cleaners. Tube inlets are built in the walls and a two inch PVC pipe is installed to take the filth loaded air to the central power unit.

Filtration System
The filtration system is a system through which air passes in order to remove particles from it. Paper bags, nylon electrostatic filters, glass fiber paper filters, cloth or foam filters, cyclonic chambers are a few of the numerous components used in filtering systems.

HEPA
HEPA is an abbreviation for High Efficiency Particulate Air. It is a filtering efficiency specification for filters capable of capturing 99.97% of all particles. HEPA is an acronym used mainly in United States whereas, in Europe S-Class filter is the name used for the same filter.

Inertia
The tendency of matter to maintain its state of rest or that of uniform motion is called inertia. In a vacuum cleaner inertia makes the fan move outward as it spins.

Mach
The number representing the ratio of the speed of an object to the speed of sound in the medium by which it is traveling. Mach number is helpful in getting the power ratings of cleaning performances.

Micron
Micron is a unit of measure often used for particular particle sizes of HEPA and ULPA filtration specifications. It is now considered obsolete, and the more appropriate term for this unit of measure is micrometer.

Polystyrene
Polystyrene is a hard and extremely transparent plastic which is a good nonconductor and an ideal molding plastic.

ULPA
Ultra Low Penetration Air (ULPA) is used for maintaining the highest degree of clean air, as ULPA is a filtering efficiency specification for filters. It cleans the smallest of retained particles.

Water Lift
In relation to the vacuum cleaner, a water lift is a measurement of the intensity of the vacuum produced by the suction motor. Suction gauges used on vacuum cleaners are standardized in lifting of water.
