It May Be Easier Than You Think To Install Bay Windows
By Peter J. Wilson

If you want to add value and character to your home you should consider Bay Windows. It's a simple installation these days with the pre-assembled bay window kits that you have available to you. It just takes some basic tools and a couple of friends to give you a hand.

We found the perfect spot in our California styled home where we had a big picture window in our front room. This window was enormous, extending from about 5 inches from our cathedral ceiling, all the way down to about 5 inches from the floor. The window was positioned over a flowerbed, some shrubbery, and the expanse of our lawn. We couldn't ask for a better window to be replaced by a Bay Window.

We were lucky that the window was basically square. It was 74 X 74 inches. After considering a bow window, we opted for the Bay Window. We wanted the three panels that the bay window offered instead of the multiple windows that make up a bow window. We planned on filling the seat board with some potted plants and flowers. These we already had in the picture window that was present in the spot. This would give us more space and improve the whole look of the house. Now we got to go shopping which was my favorite part.

We had to choose between going Pre-built, or building from scratch. I began the plans as soon as we originally got the idea for installing the window. As I look through magazines and books, plus through various sites online I found tons of plans, and even a picture of a bay window that I really liked. Luckily my consideration for building the bay window from scratch was unnecessary due to the fact that several window manufacturers offered pre-assembled and pre-built bay windows.

It's difficult now a day to find a contractor that will do this project from scratch. It's not practical for them because they can install a great quality pre-built one for the same or less money. We figured if they could do the job with a pre-built bay window, why couldn't we?

We had a contractor that we planned to use though in the case that we needed advice or needed someone to bail us out. It's definitely not a one-day job if you're doing it for the first couple of times, possibly you would even need more than two days.

As said before, help is inevitable due to the weight of the windows themselves.

Since installing meant having a hole in our home for a couple of days, we were careful of the weather. We didn't want to have to resort to a bucket brigade.

We got the job done over a beautiful long weekend, and after installing our bay window curtains, our job was done, and we were able to enjoy the fruits of our labor.

Peter J. Wilson usually writes detailed papers on information related to bay window curtains and decorating. You can have a look at his publications on decorating and bay windows over at www.replacement-windows-tips.com/bay-windows.html and various other sources for bay window curtains knowledge.
