How to Build a Driveway

The first step to having a smooth ride off the street to your garage is to build a driveway. You should build the driveway before you build the garage, because you do need to let the driveway go into the garage to form part of the floor. This way you have the smooth surface you want for driving the car right in out of the weather. You cannot place a driveway on a foundation or you will run into problems. For one thing, you will have something similar to a speed bump when you are trying to get into the garage.
The first decision you have to make is the type of material you want for the driveway - concrete, asphalt, brick, cobblestone or just plain gravel. You will need to choose something that will last a long time and either asphalt or concrete will give you this. You will need to repair and seal the driveway from time to time to keep it looking as good as the day you build it.
Concrete is prone to cracks, so you should make sure you pour it on a hard stable surface. If you use expansion joints and reinforcing steel, it will go a long way toward giving you a longlasting driveway. The land has to be properly graded and sloped and the soil has to be compacted before you start building the forms for the concrete. Unless you have a strong foundation, the first time you drive over it, the concrete will crack.
You can paint the driveway if you wish to make it look as if it is brick or sandstone. The number of colors of paint you can get for concrete is almost unlimitless. If you choose asphalt, then you are stuck with basic black, Unless you keep resealing it, the asphalt will turn a greyish color under the effects of the weather.
