Advantages of Professional Hardwood Floor Installation
By Rob Buenaventura

If you are among those who are somewhat less than handy around the house, you should seriously consider the merit of hiring a professional for hardwood floor installation rather than attempting to do it yourself. While there are many interlocking floor kits that claim to be easy for the 'do it yourselfer' you should have at least some basic skills before attempting a project of this size and scope. If you aren't skilled with at minimum hammer and nails then you shouldn't even consider installing interlocking hardwood floors (no matter what the instructions say about not needing tools).

You should also be able to very accurately determine whether or not something is level before trying to install hardwood floors. You need this skill because laying the floor evenly will affect your ability to use the room once the floor has been laid. You should also be able to saw off pieces of wood that are too long or need to be adjusted to fit into corners or you could end up wasting a lot of money.

You might also find it a good idea to seek professional hardwood floor installation if you have no sub flooring in your home or if your foundation may need to be built up in order to have even floors. If you do not have the proper foundation, your entire floor could sag. If you live in an older home that might not have perfectly even or even straight floors you should definitely consider the merit of a professional installation. The eyes of a professional are much better prepared to spot problem spots such as listing walls or sub floors that are problematic due to age.

If you do not have any of the above special considerations, a professional hardwood floor installation may not be necessary at all and you can save yourself a lot of money by doing the work yourself. Linoleum floors can also be easily fitted over your sub flooring by cutting it into strips and ceramic tile is rather easy to install, particularly if you are installing it on a new and level foundation. Hardwood floors, particularly floating hardwood floors do not require professional installation under normal circumstances for those who have a moderate degree of skill with hammer, saw, and levels.

It is quite easy to find professional hardwood floor installation trades men in your local yellow pages or on the Internet. Flooring retailers can also provide excellent references for flooring installation. Many of them might even offer their own experts to install your floors as a form of customer service (for a fee of course).
