It might seem a daunting task to begin with, but with a little forethought and a few helpful tips, the task of sorting out your closet will be a lot easier. You've made the first step in the right direction, the decision to carry out the closet organization, now the first thing to tackle is to get rid of all the clutter from your closet, forever.

Start by taking everything out of the closet and be brutal in deciding on the future of what you find there. For effective closet organization, you want to make the best of what little space you have available. Analyse each and every item you take out of the closet. Is it something that you really want to keep? Let me rephrase that. Is it something that you are going to make use of? No point keeping something that is just going to end up taking space on the shelf or in the drawer. If you have no plans to use that item in the future, throw it out.

Some articles you find during your closet organization will undoubtedly hold some sort of sentimental value to you, and I fully understand your reluctance in getting rid of them. if they are that important, then store them in an airtight container in another area of your house, maybe under the bed or in the loft.

Have you got items of clothing that you haven't worn for a number of years? Maybe you've outgrown your favorite dress or jacket? Why not consider donating them to a worthy cause. If you've clothing or shoes that are well worn, get rid of them. You'd be surprised what you can find when carrying out a major de-clutter of your closet. All of things that you threw in there because you couldn't find an alternative place at the time need to be removed. Either find another and proper place to store them or throw them out.

Now that you've minimized the things that need to put back into your closet, you need to come up with a system for your closet organization. How are you going to organize your clothing? Maybe you could use different colored hangars for different items of clothing. Maybe you want to hang them in accordance with seasons or styles. Ties and belts could be placed on racks and shoes in shoe cubes or on shelves. One thing to keep in mind is that you want maximize the amount of space available in your closet Now that you've decide how you want your closet organized, you want to start planning your closet organization by measuring what space your closet occupies. Measure the length and depth and don't forget those little nooks and crannys that can be utilized. You will need these measurements to help you choose what types of closet organization systems you will need and how many.

The type of closet organization system you can use will depend on what you have decided to put back into your closet, and how much money you are willing to invest. Do you want shelves and plenty of hanging space? Maybe you need more space to hang long garments such as coats and dresses, whilst having the ability to store a lot of shoes. Do you want something that will be fixed permanently into position or something that can be moved around at a later date, or added to when space permits? What materials are you going to use to complete your closet organization? There are a wide variety of systems available in wood, wire, baskets, plastic, canvas, metal and anything else you care to consider.

The key to good closet organization is to get rid of everything that you don't really need or use from your closet, and then organize what you are keeping in such a way as to utilize space in an economical way. Use as much space as you can which will prevent the further build up of clutter. Take time to research the different systems available and come up with a closet organization plan that you are going to love.
