Working With Bathroom Wall Tiles

Working With Bathroom Wall Tiles
By Ken Wilssens

When working with bathroom wall tile, there are several factors to consider, in order to make the job go smoothly and according to your budget and schedule. First of all, you have to choose the kind of tile you want to put in the bathroom, and there are many dozens of options in various sizes, colors, design patterns, and price ranges.

The most costly types of bathroom wall tile will in some cases also be the most beautiful: for example, Italian marble quarried and then cut into 12 inch square tiles is gorgeous, and comes in several different colors, but unless you live near the quarry, it is expensive because shipping costs are prohibitive. But sometimes you can find discounted marble left over from a large commercial job, and in a quantity large enough to work for you if your room is small. You will need to try to buy extra, in case you break a piece now or later, so that you have replacement tiles that match the wall tiles, in reserve for patch jobs. And you may need to rent a wet saw with a diamond blade, for cutting the tiles in order that they fit into tight spots that might require a little trimming work.

Inexpensive bathroom wall tile can be found in any home improvement center, and the cheapest and simplest to install is the kind made of synthetic material with a sort of plastic coating on it, that comes in thin sheets of about an eighth of an inch or less thick, and is measured like plywood, in large sections. This is not actually tile but is paneling, made to resemble tile, and it even has visible grout lines, to fool the eye into thinking it is authentic tile. The panels are usually put on the wall using adhesive, and the material may require a high speed saw with a fine blade in order to cut it to suit your needs.

Other types of bathroom wall tile come in all sizes, from mosaic little one inch tiles up to those that are 18 inches by 18 inches, but the most common are one foot or smaller squares, and these tiles are all applied using an adhesive bed and then the lines are filled in with some kind of grout, most likely it will be recommended that you use non shrinking grout. The grout can be applied from a long bag with a funnel end, called a grout bag, and then afterwards you must wash and clean the excess grout and make sure the surfaces of the tiles themselves are nice and clean, so that the dried grout doesn't leave a permanent mark on your tiles.

Whatever type of bathroom wall tile you choose, if you are uncomfortable putting it up yourself, then there are many professional contractors who do this kind of work efficiently for not a large fee, because it is not as highly skilled to do as other kinds of finishing work. The place where you buy your tiles is a good source for labor, and often they will give you a discount on installation if you buy a quantity of tile from them.
