Tips on Hiring a Contractor Prior to Doing Bathroom Renovations
By Rob Buenaventura

It is almost always a good idea to at least consult with a contractor when planning any major renovations to your home. In fact, many jobs today require professional assistance in order to meet code or regulatory requirements. When it comes to bathrooms, there are many reasons to seriously consider obtaining the assistance of licensed professionals in order to properly complete the renovations you require in a timely, efficient, and effective manner. Some of the contractors you may wish to employ for a project of this nature would include general contractors, carpenters, plumbers, and/or electricians.

You will probably find that friends and family are often excellent sources for recommendations when it comes to advice and guidance on the proper professionals to hire (just make certain that you do not hire friends and relatives). You should also take all recommendations with a grain of salt and ask around a little more. Chances are if the work is either exceptionally good or bad you will hear about it from more than one source.

You should also ask for references and job photos from any contractor you are considering. Most of them are quite proud of the work they do and more than willing to share before and after photos of many jobsites. If the contractor you are considering can't provide these or seems offended that you've asked I would move along to the next contractor. Seeing their work not only gives you a good indication of their style but also the quality of the work they do as well. You can ask and may be fortunate enough to actually see a work in progress by visiting a job site. This will allow you the opportunity to view the sort of attention they pay to detail as well as any corners that may be cut during the process. These are both important indicators of how the contractor will treat your project if you decide to go with him or her.

You should also check to see if the contractor you are considering is properly licensed for the work that he will be performing as well as has a good standing with the Better Business Bureau.

Once you've decided on a contractor comes the time to get to the actual contract. Make sure that you read all of the small print in your contract. I highly recommend that you go over the details of the contract with your attorney in order to make sure that you understand every detail completely. If you have any questions or doubts do not sign the contract. You should also make sure that there are provisions in the contract that protect you from the possibility of having the job left unfinished or allow for repairs should something need repairing within a certain timeframe.
