Organizing Your Closet
By Brett Vance

Organizing a closet can be a daunting task. If you are stuffing your shelves and stacking up piles on the floor, you are not alone. Most of us use the closet as storage and as a simple utility in our homes. After retrieving what we need, we shut the door and forget about the clutter it conceals. Today, so many options for closet organization and functionality have become available that it may be time to reassess our closets and think of them as another room of our homes.

When you decide to organize your closet, whether it is a spring cleaning project or a winter time activity to pass the time during cold days, you need to make a plan to achieve your goal. First, empty your closet completely. You will be surprised just how much space it might have once the contents are removed. Organize your belongings into groups. You may wish to create piles of clothes by season, accessories, shoes, important papers you may have stored and keep sake items. Once you have done this, decide if there are things in your closet that you no longer use. Are there clothes which are no longer worn that could be donated? If you have not worn something or needed some of the contents of your closet for a few years, then it is a good time to consider purging the items for space.

Now that you have pared down your belongings, it is time to organize the contents for their return to the closet. First, think about who uses the closet. If you are single or have your own closet, consider organizing your clothes by season, with pants, shirts, suits, and dresses in like groups. You might even consider a further organization by color within each group. This gives the closet a visually organized appearance and makes returning items to their proper place and future organization easier tasks. Think of it like color coding a file system in your office. You see the color and immediately know where to place the folder. Your closet can operate with the same efficiency. A married couple, who share a closet, should consider allotting an appropriate amount of space which corresponds to the volume of things he or she has to store. Once this is done, follow the same suggestions above to organize each person's area.

Once you have grouped your items, it is time to turn your attention to the empty closet. You should consider if improving the appearance of the closet might include a fresh coat of paint. Decide how the space could be used with the ideas of maximum organization and storage in mind. This would be a good time to take a look at local closet and container stores for ideas and items to improve your space. Before you go, you should make measurements in your closet including the height and depth of shelves. This is useful if you find storage systems that you would like to purchase. Consider all of the available options including shoe racks, storage bins, tie organizers and laundry hampers. Another option is to have a professional redesign your closet and install all new components. If you are thinking of using a custom closet company to renovate the entire space, there are many companies that can create a personal space designed to meet your storage needs and increase the value of your home in a future sale.

Now that you have your new storage system in place and your belongings narrowed down to the essentials, it is time to reload your closet. Begin with the larger items first. Once those are situated, you can load the smaller items. The result should be a well organized space that allows you to visually locate your belongings with ease while being able to remove and return the items to the same location over and over.
