2 Essential But Often Forgotten Things to Consider When Designing Your Bathroom
By Sarah H

A well designed bathroom should be a haven where one can escape and find peace. Designing a bathroom that is practical, user friendly and lavish is indeed a difficult task especially with limited square footage. Ideally adding more space would make the bathroom look and feel a whole lot larger. A bathroom is a very special space and although much care and concern goes into the design today, many people tend to neglect the issues of lighting and plumbing and instead ransom them for a grand design.

Many people enjoy this quiet room as a means to spend some time with themselves and enjoy the relaxing comfort of a warm bath. However, bathroom lighting is not only about lamps and fixtures as commonly perceived, but is also about creating that soft and pleasant mood. Lighting is a very important matter that is often compromised in the scheme of a bathroom layout. Lighting can only be achieved successfully by choosing the right lamps, placing them strategically, using mirrors and defoggers at all the correct places to avoid the shadow trap.

Although recessed lighting fixtures are widely used as the most popular bathroom lighting trend today, it does not allow for vision and reflection clarity! A halogen-recessed floodlight is quiet focused but also tends to create shadowing. In order to avoid such scary shadowing effects, home owners should remember to use recessed floodlights in combination with other general forms of lighting. A diffused light fixture with a soft focus mounted at or just above eye level is much better. The best place for them is on either side of the mirror to throw maximum light on your face and brighten it up.

Next we have plumbing, in the process of changing the older pipes for the new ones, try to remember to select cast iron instead of rigid plastic pipelines. Life is better for the cast iron pipes than other plastic finishes. Also do not forget to stuff a rag in any open waste pipes to stop sewer gases. Large and hefty bathtubs may need doubling the joists underneath them. Doubling is especially needed when notching joists so drainpipes have proper flow. Remember to check with your local construction administrator to estimate the load the tub creates and the necessary support required for it.
