Taking Care of Your Marble Counter Tops

Marble is so beautiful, that the material is often used to craft floors, counter tops, mantles, table tops, and other surfaces that are meant to be decorative and fairly sturdy. However, marble is also well known for becoming easily scratched, discolored, stained and scarred permanently. Marble may be capable of easy damage, but that should not persuade you away from the beautiful stone, because nothing compares to the beauty of high-quality marble, and you can always purchase a synthetic marble counter top, floor, table top or any other piece if you absolutely must have the look without the fragility. What you need to remember is that there are preventative measures that can be taken to keep your marble looking its best, and the marble can be cleaned or repaired if a marble piece becomes scratched, stained or dirty, as long as the damage is not too severe.
It is better for you to take steps in order to protect your marble, than to just wait to see what kind of damage can be done to it, and subsequently repaired. Even the most diligent care can eventually result in a scratch or stain that is otherwise unavoidable. You can protect your marble floors, counter tops and table tops from damage from moisture by using coasters whenever you are drinking liquids from glasses or cups, and throw rugs can be used on floors in order to cover areas with heavier than normal foot traffic. You can use protective plastic scarves under items that may cause damage to furniture made from marble. It is important to both show off the beauty of your marble, and to do everything that you can to keep it safe.
No matter how you work to keep your marble clean, it will eventually become dirty. You can use a soft, clean sponge with lukewarm water to clean the marble, but take care that the sponge is only barely damp; it does not take much water to clean the surface. Use a soft cloth that is clean to dry the damp marble, and then buff it gently until it is shining again. If cleaning with the damp sponge is no longer sufficient because the marble surface has become extremely dirty, you may consider using a small amount of dry borax and a clean damp cloth. Make sure to dry and buff it like you did with the previous cleaning method.
If at any time the cleaning of your marble ends up dulling the surface, you can use commercial marble polish in order to restore the shine it once knew. Make sure to mix the proper amount of water into the marble polish, and always use a clean, dry cloth when gently rubbing the surface. You can buff the marble to a perfect shine again, making it appear just as it did when it was brand new.
