The Benefits Of An Electric Heater
By Michelle Bery

In an effort to maintain a consistent and comfortable temperature in our homes, we often compare and contrast the heating abilities of the electric heater as opposed to those heaters powered by gas or oil. Understanding how the electric heater works to regulate the temperature of our homes - and the price we pay for that privilege - can help you begin to differentiate between the many heating varieties.

An electric heater is by far the most popular heating source used by private homeowners as well as office and retail space, government buildings, and schools. The electric heater, while more expensive then its counterparts, is a cleaner burn than gas or oil and is conveniently operated. Further, an electric heater requires little space and distributes heat equitably.

With an electric heater, heat is distributed through an interplay of coils set into the walls. When we adjust the temperature in our homes through the thermostat, a signal is sent to the electric coils which begin to heat accordingly. In an effort to increase the efficiency of the electric heater, many newly built homes are adding radiant heat into their flooring - a layer of electric coils that sit on top of the house foundation and are covered by the floor. Radiant heat can substantially increase the efficiency of the electric heater.

For those who do not have a central electric heater for the entire house, the portable electric heater - or space heater - can significantly warm a room. While this style of electric heater can pose risk of fire, most often if they are used responsibly and according to operation instructions, they can be a wonderful alternative to central heat. If you choose to install an electric heater down the road, be sure to have a licensed, reputable professional perform the installation.

Of course the use of the electric heater comes with conservation responsibility. Do your part to conserve electricity by setting your heat to a moderate temperature and by turning the heat down when you leave the house.
