If you are suffering from it most in the morning, then it could be your mattress causing the worst problem. Dust Mites are commonly found in the wadding in in Interior & Pocket Sprung Mattresses.

The best option for this is a Viscofoam(which is a synthetic material and non-allergenicc) mattress, but be sure to get a good quality one with the foam all the way through. These are relatively expensive but are getting cheaper. Shop around for these though as the offers (and quality) vary quite a bit Confused

If you want to stick to a tighter budget then a traditional mattress with a layer of Latex can provide protection, but aren't as good an option as the Viscofoam.

My kid also suffered. Had to remove all carpets, get in wooden floors, synthetic duvets and pillows and cushions (absolutely no feathers). Hoover daily and hoover curtains etc--Tough one!

You can also buy a steam cleaner and steam the mattress weekly.... It has to be a fairly good one (not one of the super cheap ones) to penetrate the mattress deeply enough.

Also, air out your bedding daily because dust mites love damp, warm conditions (like the ones under a crumpled bedcover in the morning), so flap it back and leave it for a while before making your bed.

Change bedding weekly. You don't need to boil it, the water action is enough to flush them away in the wash. Consider though that 1/4 of an old pillow's weight can be made of live and dead dust mites as well as their droppings, so buy a new pillow occasionally...

And do consider getting rid of carpets if you have them. They are poison if you suffer from respiratory irritation! My little one (3.5 yrs old) has asthma and whenever he sleeps in a bedroom with carpets, he has an attack.

Hope this helps!

The average mattress contains more harmful bacteria, viruses, fungi and mould spores than you will find in your toilet bowl. A mixture of Dust-Mites, their Excrement, dead Rotting Carcasses, decaying Skin Flakes, Perspiration Salts and other dried Bodily Fluids all add to the contamination found in your bed. You clean everything else in your house regularly, but what about your mattress?

The Mattress Doctor is Ireland's premier dedicated mattress cleaning service. We provide a unique service for allergy sufferers or just about anyone who wants to experience the benefits of sleeping in a really clean bed. Asthma and Eczema sufferers in particular have experienced real improvements in their condition after having their mattress treated by us.

The Mattress Doctor are official corporate sponsors of The Asthma Society of Ireland. We make direct contributions to them to assist in their on-going research and donate up to €5.00 for every mattress we clean to them. For further information go to www.asthmasociety.ie We are also corporate sponsors of The Irish Eczema Society and make contributions to their official newsletter “ECZACT”. For details check out www.eczemaireland.org

Having your mattress cleaned removes contaminants that cause allergic reactions and aids restful sleep. In particular we treat and remove the source of the problem for sufferers of House Dust-Mite Allergy (HDM)

Our service is a 100% organic, non-toxic system that has been developed after detailed research into the area of HDM allergy.
Our Mattress Hygiene Spray is a powerful non-toxic antibacterial agent that has been tested and proven to eliminate MRSA from bedding and clothing.

My eldest son suffers from asthma so I can sympathize with you! We changed his mattress and that made a big difference. If you get one with a layer of latex or visco elastic foam (used in memory foam mattresses), they're anti-mite, anti-bacterial and anti-mildew so that should help with the allergies.

They might be a little more expensive than regular mattresses, but if you consider the amount of time you spend in bed and all the time you'll save from having to steam or hoover your other mattress, it's money well spent, plus they're very good for your back. We shopped around and found some very reasonably priced ones at www.clerysbedstore.ie.
