I want to put some garden lights in. I see you can buy 12volt dc and 240v ac versions. Is there any reason to choose one or the other?

Electrocution!
230V garden appliances will need steel-wire armoured (SWA) cable, which should be buried about 2ft deep. This is to prevent somebody piercing it with a fork or shovel at a later date. (Ideally done by an electrician as you need proper cable-glands and a good earth bond.)

12V or 24V light fittings will not electrocute you, so you can run the 2-core wire on the surface or under bark-mulch / gravel. A 230V to 12V voltage transformer needs to be plugged in at the power socket in the shed or house.
